Why do pipes break?

Pipes can break for many reasons. The Bountiful, UT area is notorious for very cold winter months which will cause some pipes to freeze and break. Most pipes begin to freeze when they are close to the outside walls. As ice forms inside the pipe it pushes the water back forming pressure inside.

The weakest point in the pipe will break causing a water loss. Most people believe that the pipe will break close to where the ice is forming, but, the pipe breaks wherever the weakest point is located. In this building it was in the ceiling and it flooded the entire floor.
